Johnson Matthey provides retrofit diesel emissions control systems for a variety of equipment such as excavators and specialist tunnelling machines, which can greatly improve the air quality. Our diesel emission control devices can reduce the mass of harmful particulates emitted by diesel engines by more than 90%, and the number by over 99%. They can also control emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and/or nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from the engine.

For diesel applications where maximum NOx reduction is critical, SCR technology provides the highest NOx reduction available today. Johnson Matthey's SCRT® system reduces all four regulated exhaust emissions: CO, HC and PM by over 90% and NOx by 70%.

Tight emissions limits on nitrogen dioxide as well as particulate matter in underground operations mean that CRT® and CCRT® technology has to be adapted in order to comply. With the development of the Mining-CRT® system, Johnson Matthey has enabled proven and reliable technology to continue to be used for underground mobile machinery.

The solution is simple but effective. Droplets of Diesel fuel are injected between the filter and an additional special decomposition catalyst. The filter monitor controls the injection rate depending on the exhaust gas temperature and the engine speed. This system reduces 99.8% of the number of particulates, 90% of the CO and HC, and NO2 is kept at the engine out level.
